Considering Switching Your Medicare Plan?

Medicare isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and your healthcare needs may change over time. Whether your current plan no longer meets your needs or you’ve found a better option, it’s important to understand when and how you can switch your Medicare coverage and what benefits and drawbacks exist with change.

When Can You Switch Medicare Plans?

There are specific periods when you can make changes to your Medicare coverage:

1. Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) – October 15 to December 7

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage (sometimes referred to as a Part C) plan

  • Change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another

  • Enroll in, switch, or drop a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan

  • Changes made during Annual Enrollment take effect on January 1 of the following year

2. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period – January 1 to March 31

  • If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:

    • Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage)

    • Return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan

  • You cannot switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage during this period

3. Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

Certain life events may qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, allowing you to change plans outside of the standard enrollment windows. These events include:

  • Moving out of your plan’s service area

  • Losing employer or union health coverage

  • Qualifying for Medicaid or a Medicare Savings Program

  • Plan termination or significant changes to plan coverage

Reasons to Consider Switching Your Medicare Plan

  • Lower Costs – You may find a plan with lower premiums, copays, or deductibles.

  • Better Coverage – Your healthcare needs may have changed, and a different plan might offer better benefits.

  • Network Changes – Your preferred doctors or hospitals may no longer be in your plan’s network.

  • Prescription Drug Needs – Your current plan may no longer cover your medications at an affordable cost.

  • Added Benefits – Some plans offer extra benefits like vision, dental, or wellness programs.

How to Make a Change

  1. Review Your Current Plan – Look at your benefits, costs, and provider network.
